Great leaders cultivate a number of critical skills. From constant evaluation and coaching, to establishing trust with candor, transparency, and credit, there are many characteristics that define front-line leadership. We believe translating leadership into coaching is a crucial part of creating an environment which fosters success. Avoiding common traps – such as confusing confidence for ability or assuming tenure equals aptitude – can also be key to leaders’ effectiveness.
We recommend advisors undertake a self-assessment: (1) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a coach, and (2) What coaching challenges do you face on your team? Most coaching mistakes can be traced back to the same root cause: Either a lack of assessment, or a lack of adaptation.
The goal is to help team members become proficient in all tasks critical to their success. To analyze team members’ roles effectively, we offer these four levels of assessment.
